When it comes to the Parc de Montsabert, small is definitely beautiful. We inspect a lot of parks and only a few make the grade. Fewer still have such a relaxing setting as the charming Parc de Montsabert – a peaceful enclave tucked into the leafy oak and redwood plantations of what was once a castle estate.

And Parc de  Montsabert is well placed to explore the best of them.  Châteaux abound along both banks of the tranquil River Loire – the best of which are open to the public, and in summer especially are a delight to visit. The seven storey Brissac, the tallest in the Loire, is home to a stunning gilded theatre and 600 years of history. Saumur's elegant, white château is more intimate and soars above the charming town, its streets lined with trim townhouses and boutiques selling the local sparkling, white wines.

Nearby, you can visit the troglodyte cave dwellings in the cliffs which hint that this region has a history stretching back thousands of years. Take a drive along the left bank of the Loire and you can see their chimneys smoking away, like something out of The Hobbit! Montsabert is also situated close to Angers, which was an important Roman stronghold, and the seat of the counts of Anjou: 12th-century nobles who controlled much of southern France.

Today it's a sedate place, with an impressive cathedral and, of course, the obligatory Château – this one home to a wonderful 14th century tapestry. Vineyards cloak the surrounding hills and the region is a vibrant wine growing area, but not all grapes become wine - Angers is also home to another wonderful alchemy of grape, sun and soil: Cointreau orange liqueur.
